Leadership Through Service: A Personal Journey

I joined the Brookfield Volunteer Fire Department, Candlewood Company Incorporated in 1973, following in the footsteps of my father, Life Member Robert Gramling. From the first day joining Candlewood Company, you realize that its members, both past and present, are a special breed of individuals who come from all walks of life. They joined to help and serve the people of our community. Whether it be for a fire, rescue or emergency medical call; our members respond 24 hours /7 days a week to help those in need.

Being elected as Fire Chief in 1987 and still currently serving in that position has been a very rewarding experience for me. A Chief today has to be prepared to deal with not only the emergency calls that occur but also administrative responsibilities, personnel issues, and the day to day operations of a volunteer fire department. All of this cannot be accomplished without a great support staff of line and executive officers who oversee the general membership that consists of interior and exterior firefighters, fire police, junior firefighters and probationary members.

Pride, tradition and brotherhood are terms that should continue to exist throughout all firehouses. Candlewood Company does its best to keep those terms alive. If you are 16 years of age or older and want to know more about being a member of the Brookfield Volunteer Fire Department, Candlewood Company Incorporated please stop by the firehouse located at 18 Bayview Drive any Monday night or call 203.775.2440 and speak with a member or leave a message.

Be careful and safe,

Gary Gramling

Fire Chief
